Great mattress, fantastic price May 12, 2005 Linda Day (Texas) 157 out of 162 found this review helpful
Before ordering this mattress, I went to a local mattress store, laid around on a Tempurpedic, and looked at the foam. I explored on the net and found e-mattress.com, which was selling a Queen 10-inch Sensus foam mattress for about $1000 (the Tempurpedic price is about $2000). The e-mattress version of Sensus memory foam has nice quilting around the sides and a zip-off top for easy cleaning, whereas this Amazon Queen mattress has just a simple plush cotton covering on the mattress, which zips around the bottom -- the same covering the Tempurpedic uses. The key thing was that the e-mattress version of Sensus got a rave revue from Money Magazine, which said that Sensus was the best alternative to Tempurpedic, and the Sensus company is no fly-by-night foam outfit. So I ordered this Amazon version of Sensus -- figured I didn't need the fancy cover for an extra $300. And I sure didn't need Tempurpedic for an extra $1300. And besides, ordering this mattress from Amazon I got a 12-inch mattress instead of 10 inches.
I managed to track down the selling company (not easy -- it is Merit Mart, 800-774-8685)and talked to them by phone, verifying (to my satisfaction) that they get the foam from Sensus and simply add the cotton covering before shipping it out.
The shipping had no tracking, and the mattress took about 2-3 weeks to arrive. Nervous moments. But it was as described: 5 inches of Sensus (pink memory foam) bonded to a 7-inch base layer. The difference between this mattress and the Tempurpedic is that Tempurpedic uses two layers of base foam with two "egg-crate" interfaces; i.e., the bond of memory foam to the first base layer is solid to egg-crate, and the bond of first layer to second (bottom) layer is solid to egg-crate.
I believe the Tempurpedic gives a softer, more conforming feel because of the egg-crate bonds between the layers, and I wish this mattress used that approach. When you first lie down on the Sensus mattress, you feel a bit like you're lying on a plank, but then you sink in and get comfortable. I wake up without sore spots, and I can lie in positions that used to be uncomfortable on my previous Soft Beauty Rest (a hugely plush pillow top that started to develop sags after only a couple of years of use -- this mattress felt super comfortable when you first lay down, but then you would feel the pressure points).
So I am extremely satisfied. There is no written warranty statement per se, only the seller's affirmation that the first 10 years is a manufacturer's warranty (Sensus) and the second 10 years is their warranty. This seller was very light on paperwork (no tracking). But then, are you really going to return this mattress?? It is HEAVY. The delivery guy helped me wrassle it into the bedroom and thank goodness because there's no way a lone woman is going to do it.
So all in all, my hearty recommendations for a great product.
Awesome Mattress! Spectacular Value! Great Shipper March 18, 2005 Mr. K. Bras (Littlerock, CA) 21 out of 22 found this review helpful
We ordered this mattress and it was delivered to the doorstep in six days! The mattress is every bit as good as a Tempur-Pedic, about 8 of my relatives have them and I have slept on them for years and the Sensus mattress is the same or better at a fraction of the cost. I could not believe I got this mattress at this cost with no tax or shipping, which is usually 199.00. Unbelievable! Thanks a million Foamatic International, MeritMart, and Amazon. What a score!
Ignore all negative reviews. Memory foam is the future for beds! October 17, 2006 Christoph B (-----) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I used to have a single spring mattress which relied on a box spring for support. The mattress broke a spring, thus leaving a spike in the middle of the bed. (Yes, I did say middle!) After years of sleeping on the other side of this mattress, I decided that I'd had enough, and looked for memory foam mattresses. Besides, I have a serious relationship so I decided to invest into the future and find a mattress that would be large enough for two people.
And I am very happy with this mattress.
First off, let me get what I do not like about it out of the way. Apart from opening the thing (as the packing is a pain to get through) and having to wait for a whole whooping two hours (big deal!) for it to reach its full shape, I have nothing bad to say about this mattress. And considering that I will NEVER have to worry about either stated problem ever again, I would hardly call these "problems" significant.
[EDIT on July 27, 2008] The only real problem is moving it. There aren't any handles and it's VERY heavy, VERY clumsy and VERY dense. So if you're the type who moves frequently then you may not want to invest into this mattress. [END EDIT]
Now let me explain what I love about it. The mattress is VERY comfortable, and only a frame and piece of plywood are necessary for it. So figuring 120 for the frame, another 80 for the plywood (cut) and 500 for the mattress, I have spent 700 altogether. Now I come from no rich family, but to say this was some of the best money I've ever spent is the understatement of the year. In addition to this, the bed conforms to your body until you get up or move, then it returns to its original shape.
And as for complaints about the "smell" don't listen to them. The smell is not exactly horrid, and even if it was, it is GONE in two weeks. If it really is so bad that you can't wait that long, buy a bottle of Febreeze. Boom. Problem solved. My personal opinion is that it smells nice, but such is my opinion and that won't buy you a cup of coffee. And whether the foam is 5 inches or 5.3, it makes no difference. The foam is VERY comfortable, and I have had NO problems sleeping.
And of course, I'll never have to worry about any springs poking into me ever again.
If you're in the market for a good sized bed for two, then this is what you want. Trust me on this.
Great mattress for the price August 8, 2005 Erin R. Schulte (St. Louis, MO) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This mattress seemed almost too good to be true. I did a lot of research to find this mattress to be the best for the price. I took the plunge and ordered it because the previous reviews were so good. And I am not at all disappointed.
It did take 3 whole weeks to get the mattress, so if you are ordering it please be prepared for it to take a while, but there is no shipping cost so who could complain.
I was a bit frustrated that the Sleep Shop had no tracking system so there was a week where I wasn't sure where my mattress was. This irritated me a bit. But the customer service I recieved was so quick and friendly! Sure enough they called me to tell me it was being delivered the next morning, and then only two hours later they were at my front door! Not only that but the delivery people helped carry it up a flight of stairs because it is HEAVY!
I am really glad I bought this mattress and would recommend it to others who would like to save a load of money. IT is a good deal.
Excellant Value....Fantastic Mattress February 7, 2006 Mike & Sharon (Dayton, ohio) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Obviously, J.L. Lawson from the previous reviews received a "counterfeit product". This is NOT just a foam mattress. I received the "real thing" and....am pleasantly surprised. I cannot imagine rating this product less than a 4 star. I received the queen size mattress in 6 business days with absolutely no concerns. Surprisingly, The mattress is shipped "compressed" and rolled up. It's eye-popping how the mattress expands to its final size...approx 2 hours. One could actually place a glass of wine on one side of the mattress... jump up and down on the other side without causing any spillage. The mattress comfort, although firm at first, is quite comfortable and enticing. No more backaches !!! I cannot imagine a ...better mattress. My wife and I ARE VERY..VERY...satisfied. Thank-You to the previous reviewers for persuading me to purchase this product.
